The coronavirus situation in Singapore is still a work in process. We know within the last week Singapore has banned all social gathering including private meetups and made wearing of face masks in public mandatory.
With reduced daily physical activity as well as limited opportunities for exercise, it should come as no surprise that people are starting to exercise aches and pains.
Both chiropractors and physiotherapists alike are considered non-essential services.
It is what it is. Telehealth is here to stay!
Research supports telehealth
In this video, I am working with a client to guide him through a NEW exercise. He followed by instructions with only audio cues. If required, we also do demonstrations!
Again, we have shared before that telehealth does indeed work for musculoskeletal (joint and muscle) conditions. A research looking at over 10,000 patients found telehealth to be useful at reducing symptoms for knee pain and back pain.
In the study study, over 50% of the participants reported improvements in their mental health state as well as an increase in work productivity.
How good does that sound?
Yes, I hear you. Online video consultations is not intuitive. We are used to seeing a chiropractor or a physiotherapists in person. Often in Singapore, you’ll receive ‘hands on’ treatments such as chiropractic adjustments, massages, dry needling, etc.
However, the research has repeatedly demonstrated that exercise – yes, exercise – is the best best best approach when it comes to managing muscle and joint issues!
Moral of the story? You don’t have to live with your pain during circuit breaker!
Psychological factors may matter more than physical factors
It is unfortunate that the mainstream narrative when it comes to neck pain, shoulder pain, etc is disempowering.
It’s often to hear people say things like, “your muscles are very tight and you need to come see me to release them.”
“You need more sessions to work on strengthening your gluts.”
All of these are just rubbish marketing fluff.
(Yes, we do know exercise works. What we don’t know is how.)
In fact, there’s very little – if not zero – reasons to believe that physical factors such as weakness, muscle “tightness”, etc are the causes of your issues!
A study published in 2001 (yes, we’ve known it for a while now) looking at low back pain found psychological factors to have a bigger impact on disability than physical factors.
According to the study, psychological factors explained more of the differences in disability score (as compared to physical factors).
Pain, psychological disturbance, & fear-avoidance beliefs were the *ONLY* significant factors which explained change in disability.
Adapt and thrive, we can do this

You see, online chiropractic works for two reasons: 1) hands-off care deliver superior outcomes to hands on chiropractic adjustments, etc 2) there are a lot of areas you can work on just by speaking to a professional.
